AEM's Safety Manual Program

Hydraulic Excavator Safety Manual Cover ImageUnder the guidance of the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM) and its member manufacturers, a series of equipment safety manuals have been produced to provide owner, operators, service personnel and mechanics with basic safety procedures and warnings for their day-to-day work with the equipment.

The safety manuals are prepared by an AEM council task force or subcommittee with the assistance of an outside safety communication consultant. Each contains job-oriented safety information and illustrations of basic work situations intended to assist in motivating the user to act safely and avoid accidents to himself/herself and others.

The industry safety manuals are intended to cover all equipment of the same generic kind. This makes them useful in connection with old products and new products alike - regardless of make or model. They can be used by organizations outside the manufacturing industry for general safety education purposes, employee training programs, union apprenticeship programs, rental operations, etc. Experience tends to indicate there is a broader acceptance on the part of safety educators and other safety professionals if a manual is generic rather than limited to the products of one manufacturer.

These industry safety manuals are not intended as a substitute for the manufacturer's owner/operator's manual, signs, or other safety-related information the manufacturer deems appropriate for his product, and the industry manuals never should be used as such.

The greatest potential benefit of an industry manual when used in conjunction with other safety communications is accident prevention. There is also the possibility of benefits for individual companies in the area of product liability.
